It’s never too late to become who you’re meant to be

Most people drift into retirement without a plan for what makes life meaningful. I help people get out of autopilot and intentionally design a retirement life that reflects what matters most to them.

Retirement Isn’t Just About Money

As an expert on aging and a scrappy Gen Xer myself, I know that retirement is about far more than finances. It’s about identity, social connection, where you’ll live, how you’ll spend your time, and purpose and meaning. And most people drift into it without a plan for any of those things.

Are you:

Still working and feeling unsatisfied

Near or newly retired and feeling uncertain

Years into retirement and quietly asking “Now What?”

You’re not alone—and you don’t have to figure it out by yourself.

I help you get out of autopilot and intentionally design a life that reflects what matters most to you.

Choose the stage you’re in

Stage 1:
Gen Xers: Meaningful Work, On Your Own Terms

You’re not ready to retire. You want to keep working, but on your own terms, doing work that actually means something.

You’re still working, but your job no longer fits. You crave more meaning, but retirement feels far away. Making a change feels risky.

I help Gen X professionals get out of autopilot and redesign their work life now, so they’re not stuck waiting for retirement to fully live life again.

Redesign your work now and bring meaningful work with you into whatever comes next.

Stage 2:
Near or Newly
Retired

You’re newly retired or about to be. You feel excited…and disoriented. You have newfound freedom, but also loss of structure and identity that work provided.

I help you build a concrete, personalized plan for retirement, including: how you’ll spend your time, stay socially engaged, maintain your health, consider where you’ll live, and build a life with purpose and meaning.

Let’s design a retirement life that reflects what matters most to you.

Stage 3:
Boomers Stuck in the “Now What?”

You’ve been retired for a while. The honeymoon phase is over. You’re comfortable, but bored. Busy, but not fulfilled.

This is your invitation to get out of autopilot: to re-engage, reconnect with your purpose, and move from drifting through retirement to intentionally designing what comes next.

It’s not too late for a refresh, or a reinvention.

Retirement Coach • Expert on Aging • Writer

Jessica McIlvane, PhD

Hi, I’m Jessica. I’m a Certified Professional Retirement Coach, with a PhD in developmental psychology focused on aging, and over 20 years of experience researching, teaching, and writing about aging and later life.

Most people drift into retirement without a plan for what makes life meaningful. My career has been devoted to understanding how people age, what helps them flourish, and what gets in the way. I help Gen Xers and Boomers get out of autopilot and intentionally design a retirement life that reflects what matters most to them.

Retirement isn’t just about being financially prepared. It’s about replacing your work identity, finding purpose and meaning, staying socially connected, maintaining your health, deciding where you’ll live, and how you want to spend your time—the key areas of living well that most retirement planning completely ignores.

Whether you’re still working and craving more meaning, newly retired and feeling disoriented, or years into retirement and asking “Now what?”— I help you get clear on what you want and build a path forward that’s truly yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Retirement coaching helps you get out of autopilot and intentionally design a life before, during, and after retirement. While financial planning is important, retirement coaching focuses on the non-financial side of retirement—identity, purpose, structure, connection, and how you want to spend your time—so you can design a life that truly reflects what matters most to you.

Most people drift into retirement without a plan for what makes life meaningful. Yet, many will spend 20–30 years or more in retirement. That’s a long chapter of life—and it deserves thoughtful planning.

Non-financial retirement planning helps you answer questions like:

• Who am I when work changes or ends?

• How do I want to spend my days?

• How will I stay socially engaged and connected?

• What gives my life meaning and purpose now?

• Where will I live now and later?

Retirement coaching helps you move beyond simply being done with work to actively designing a life that supports your well-being and reflects what matters most to you.

Not at all — especially if you’re a Gen Xer. Many of my clients aren’t thinking about retirement yet. They’re thinking about how to make their work more meaningful, how to reclaim their time and energy, and how to build a work life that fits who they are now. Retirement may be years away — but designing a life that feels intentional doesn’t have to wait.

I work primarily with Gen Xers and Boomers at every stage of retirement:

• Gen Xers who are still working but craving more meaning—on their own terms

• People who are approaching or newly retired who feel uncertain or disoriented

• Retirees who have been out of work for a while and are quietly asking “Now What?”

If you’re feeling stuck, restless, or unsure how to shape this next chapter, you don’t have to figure it out alone.

I offer:

• One-on-one retirement coaching for individuals before, during, and after retirement

• Group coaching and workshops for organizations, communities, and member groups

• Freelance writing focused on aging, retirement, and the non-financial sides of life after work

All of my work centers on helping people get out of autopilot and intentionally design a life that reflects what matters most to them.

I write about aging, retirement, work, identity, purpose, and the non-financial side of life after work. My writing draws on research, real-life experience, and a deep understanding of the emotional and practical transitions that come with aging and retirement.

My goal is to inform, inspire, and challenge readers to think differently about what it means to live well in later life.
